The Harmonic Series

The Harmonic Series is the "DNA" of sound. It is the natural phenomenon where a single vibrating object (like a string or a column of air) vibrates not just at its full length, but also in halves, thirds, quarters, and so on, all at the same time.
When you pluck a guitar string, the fundamental frequency (the Logos) is the loudest, but the string is also vibrating in "nodes." These higher frequencies are called Overtones or Harmonics. The Fundamental (1st Harmonic): The note you think you're hearing ($f$).The Octave (2nd Harmonic): The string vibrating in two halves ($2f$).The Perfect Fifth (3rd Harmonic): The string vibrating in three parts ($3f$).The Rest: As you go higher ($4f, 5f, 6f...$), the intervals get smaller and smaller, eventually creating a full scale within a single note.
Researcher Note:
The Filter of Matter: A wooden violin body amplifies certain overtones and dampens others. This creates "Timbre"—the unique "color" of a sound. In psychological terms, this is the Persona of the sound—the specific way it presents its internal "truth" to the world.
